Is that what I think it is?

How would you like to be the guy that fins this on your next junkyard run?

Quote:

3-13-06 - A grenade was found outside a Sherman business on Monday. Employees at D & R Metal off of Lamar Street found a piece of metal that they thought resembled a grenade.

Sherman Police Department took pictures and sent them of to officials at Fort Sill to review. The military says it was a Japanese neo-mortar round, which is a basic military grenade with the pin in it which is leading officials to believe it is still live. The employees found the grenade next to some barrels dumped in with someone’s scrap metal.

Fort Sill Military specialists arrived to the scene where they took the grenade to an unknown secure location away from buisnesses and homes and destroyed the grenade to be safe.

A military granade is found amongst a pile of scrap metal at a Sherman business. Employees of D&R Metal found it when they came to work around 9am this morning. KTEN's Chelsea Hover reports.

When the workers found what looked like a granade lying near some barrels this morning...they called police. They say it did have the pin in it...leading officials to believe it was still live.

Sherman Police took pictures of it and sent them off to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for analysis. Weapons experts there confirmed it as a live Japanese neo-mortar round, which is a basic military grenade dating back to before 1945.

Since the grenade was under a large piece of metal...the business owners weren't worried about it detonating, and carried on business as usual. But after 17 years in the scrap metal business, owner Sharon Barron says it came as a shock.

"Something like that, you don't ever imagine coming through here," Barron said. "It was probably in the iron pile and just got in here."

Barron added that they get scarp metal from counties all over the Lone Star state, so it culd virtually be from anywhere. But since it wasn't found in a pile of scrap metal, she thinks it may have been intentionally placed there.

Officials from Fort Sill came to Sherman to secure and remove the grenade. Then it was taken to the Sherman firing range to be detonated.

Sherman police will follow-up with the investigation and try to find out where the eplosive device came from.

It is illegal for any person to intentionally or knowingly possess, manufacture, transport, repair, or sell an explosive weapon and if caught the offender could face 2 to 10 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
