The 2009 NCAA Football Thread (All news, polls, team spirit and rivalries in here)

Oh yeah baby it's time! With all the spring games out of the way, summer practices are looming and kickoff to the 2009 season is just a few months away!

Quote:
ATLANTA – ESPN has chosen to make the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game its prime time ABC national broadcast on the opening weekend of the 2009 college football season Chick-fil-A Bowl and ESPN officials announced Thursday.

The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, a Chick-fil-A Bowl event, will match projected preseason top-10-ranked powers Alabama and Virginia Tech on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. (EDT) in the Georgia Dome.

“When you can match two top-10 teams in the first week, it really does start to look like a BCS-style game to open the season,” said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Bowl president and CEO. “We think the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game is the biggest game out there and we’re proud of our partnership with ESPN and that ABC will be broadcasting the game in its prime time slot.”
Last year’s season-opening Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game featured No. 9 Clemson against No. 24 Alabama in a sold-out game that was also nationally broadcast by ABC. The match-up of two top-25 teams drew on-site appearances by ESPN’s College GameDay and College Football Live! shows and delivered more than 22,000 fans for a pre-game fan experience in Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park.

The 2008 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game broadcast window delivered a television rating of 3.6, equaling more than four million viewing households.
“After a fabulous inaugural Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game we’re excited to be back in the great city of Atlanta for the start of the fourth season of Saturday Night Football on ABC,” said Dave Brown, ESPN vice president, programming and acquisitions. “With a match-up of two teams expected to be in the pre-season top 10, the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game has quickly developed into a cornerstone of the opening weekend of college football. We thank the Chick fil-A Bowl and Chick-fil-A and especially Virginia Tech and Alabama for making the game possible and we look forward to a great game.”

The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game – billed as the “Daytona 500 of college football” – was created by the Chick-fil-A Bowl and ESPN, as a BCS-type game to kick off the season matching two elite football programs on the first Saturday of every season.
Alabama defeated Clemson in the inaugural Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game 34-10, using the game to help propel them to a No. 1 national ranking and an eventual BCS bowl berth.

yeah but OSU lost what, a leadership LB a RB and some secondary...

yeah they go down to top 20-25, but

UGA lost THEIR WHOLE OFFENSE and are still just outside of top 15

USC lost their Starting QB, their entire LB core, and a few keys on DL and secondary on DEFFENSE, along with there second best wide out...

how do you LOSE your entire starting D and your QB and STILL be top 10...

I would move Ole miss to 3rd, they were the only team to beat Florida last season. Move OU to 4th. Swap Utah and Penn state spots since Utah wrecked Bama in the bowl game. Georgia tech needs to move up a little too, they were hard to sto last season with their Option runs. Everything else looks pretty good

Four-star quarterback Nick Montana (6-3, 186, 4.6) from Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian made one school very happy Tuesday night as he has made his college decision.

Montana had plenty of options as he had offers from the likes of Arizona, Arizona State, Stanford, Washington, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, South Carolina, Florida State, Maryland, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Ohio State.

But in the end, it was a Pac-10 program that got the commitment.

"Nick committed to Washington tonight," Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell said. "I think Nick made a great decision, and I think his family is happy with the decision."

The decision can be traced to the efforts of Washington's head coach. Montana had just taken an unofficial visit to Seattle this past weekend.

"Steve Sarkisian did a great job recruiting him," Redell said. "Getting Nick is great for the future of the Washington program.

"Not only do the Huskies get a great quarterback in Nick. But they get a great family, too."

Montana is the son of NFL legend Joe Montana. As a junior, Montana threw for 2,404 yards and 33 touchdowns.

"In Nick, the Huskies get a quarterback with outstanding leadership skills," Redell said. "He is very poised, nothing rattles him. He is extremely calm under fire."

Montana earned newcomer of the year, first-team all-CIF, first-team all-county, first-team all-state and first-team all-league after completing 55 percent of his passes as a junior. He can make plays with his feet and had three rushing touchdowns to his credit.

Landing Montana is a good beginning for the Sarkisian era of Husky football.

Montana is the ninth known commitment for the Huskies and the most decorated player in their class. UDub also has a pledge from four-star defensive tackle Sione Potoae, but recently the 6-foot-3, 285-pounder has been looking at other schools.
BAH! Why goto Washington... I mean it doesn't matter where you play for the most part, as long as you are good and can turn heads... plenty of great players have come out of lesser known schools or schools on the rebound or div 2 schools... BUT why choose Washington if you are Nick Montana?

Why not Texas?

Why not Texas?

because texas didnt recruit him???

but still yeah WTF commit to Washington and its WELL past signing day so that would mean either this tard committed to washington B4 even starting his Senior year in highschool or waited so damn long to finally commit that he's put himself in redshirt category for sure... imean he CANT be committing to them as a freshman for next year... can he?? imean you miss ALL spring stuff, and early/mid summer workouts and team meetings.

so if he's a Junior WTF are you thinking?!?!?!?!?!?

as for the article itself the writer annoys the heck outta me with this line...

Quote:

the first 4 fucking schools listed where pac 10.... i dunno just annoying

NCAA schedules Alabama infractions announcement - College Football - Rivals.com

Quote:
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP)—The NCAA has scheduled a teleconference to announce a decision on Alabama amid reports that the football program will forfeit at least 10 wins and the university placed on probation.

The teleconference to discuss the decision by the Committee on Infractions will be at 3 p.m. ET Thursday. No details were disclosed in the announcement, but several media outlets reported that the university will have to forfeit wins from the 2006 and 2007 football seasons that included players who obtained free textbooks for other students.

Alabama will also be placed on probation for the second time in the past eight years, according to the reports, which cited unnamed sources.

University officials aren’t permitted to comment until the NCAA releases its findings. The investigation also included athletes in other sports that the university has not disclosed.

Alabama appeared before the Committee on Infractions on Feb. 20 to answer allegations of potentially major violations involving the improper disbursement of textbooks and “failure to adequately monitor” the textbook distribution process for student-athletes.

The violations occurred during the 2005-06 school year and into the fall of 2007. That left the university subject to potentially stiffer penalties as a repeat violator because the football program was placed on probation on Feb. 1, 2002.

The new case also reopens the five-year repeat violator window.

Nick Saban replaced Mike Shula as coach after the 2006 football season and suspended five players—Antoine Caldwell, Glen Coffee, Marquis Johnson, Chris Rogers and Marlon Davis—for four games when the university uncovered the violations in 2007. The Tide was 5-2 at that point and its only wins in the next six games came against Tennessee and Colorado in the Independence Bowl. ....

Tebow is head of class among top college senior QB prospects

Quote:
This is the first in a weekly series detailing the top senior prospects, by position, for the 2010 NFL Draft.
Quote:

The quarterback position is the ultimate team need. Without a solid player at this position, a team has little chance to win. That's why 29 quarterbacks have been selected first overall since the beginning of the draft in 1936.

One important predictor for success when drafting quarterbacks is the number of games started in college -- 30-plus seems to be the magic number of starts when talking about quarterbacks selected in the first round. The most important traits for quarterbacks to have to be successful are mental quickness, accuracy and intangibles that include work habits.

Note: This list only includes players who will have exhausted their eligibility after the 2009 season. Oklahoma's Sam Bradford will have a year of eligibility remaining due to redshirting his freshman year and was not included for that reason -- even though he would be a top prospect if
he chooses to come out.

Here are the top 12 senior quarterback prospects NFL scouts will be keeping a close eye on this fall.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d810bda9e&template=without-video-with-comments&confirm=true

1. Tim Tebow
2. Colt McCoy
3. Dan LeFevour
4. Jarrett Brown
5. Tim Hiller
6. Zac Robinson
7. Tony Pike
8. Isiah "Juice" Williams
9. John Skelton
10. Max Hall
11. Rusty Smith

12. Joe Webb

Decent line up of talent for next year... Allthough I would have to add Jeavon Sneed and possibly Sam Bradford to that list (if he decideds to leave his jr year)

WOW Pike is THAT high.. not as strong of a cast as i thought

Poor jimmy Clausen unless braford goes this year there wont be much fan fare next year when/if he goes ... what a bad decision to go to ND for him...

but IMO Tebow/McCoy/Bradford should be tied for number one going into this season simply due to their styles of play...

Bradford = QB similatiry Marino, a pure passer, and in all honesty little more than that

McCoy = QB similarity Young, a role out Balanced QB

Tebow = QB similatiry Johnny U, a Field General/Commander

it will really be up to the style of QB the top few teams want/need for their system IMO

McCoy and Bradford are both pocket passers, but McCoy can move and stretch the pocket and scramble aswell, where as Bradford is slow balls and tends to stay put. Bradford, hands down reminds me of a young Marino.
If anything McCoy reminds me of a young Favre or Elway or Tarkenton.

Tebow is just a pure leader, and can be a pocket passer or a scrambler or pocket mover when he needs to be... but we see him run and scramble allot. I know he can throw, and throw well, I want to see him throw a little more than run this year.
The difference between Tebow and other scrambling QBs, for instance, Vick, is that Tebow will only scramble if he HAS to or is TOLD to, Vick would scramble just because he was pressured a little and rarely gave the play enough time to develope.

Tebow reminds me of a young P. Manning or Brees or Montana, especially with their leadership skills and tenacity.

only problem with the Manning or Breeze similarities are that i dunno if he is in the same league in accuracy as the two of them... both showed unbelieveable abilities in range and accuracy for Tenn. and Purdue respectively... Tebow has good accuracy but i dunno if he can thread the same caliber of needles those two did... i also put both of them above Montana in pure accuracy, so yeah i could see the Montana similarity.

I went with Johhny U as Don SHula used that similatiry to descirde thetype of QB HE thought Tebow would become in the NFL shortly after this years title game...

NCAA intends to take away Florida State victories - College Football - Rivals.com

Quote:
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)—The NCAA infractions committee intends to uphold sanctions against Florida State that would take away wins in 10 sports, including as many as 14 by football coach Bobby Bowden.
After a public records lawsuit and intervention by Florida’s attorney general, the NCAA allowed Florida State to release the committee’s June 2 response to FSU’s appeal of the NCAA punishment that would strip the school of the victories.
Though university officials had said earlier Thursday that there would be no comment from Florida State, president T.K. Wetherell denounced the NCAA’s response.
“This committee is just wrong,” Wetherell said. “The rationale for doing that isn’t accurate.”
Wetherell, a former Seminole football player, said the school would exhaust all appeal opportunities with the NCAA “before going anywhere else.”
If the penalty sticks, Bowden would have little chance to stay abreast of Penn State’s Joe Paterno in their competition to finish as major college football’s winningest coach. Paterno begins the 2009 season with 383 wins, right now that is one more than Bowden has entering his 34th season at Florida State.
“There was no coach involved in this,” Wetherell said. “The one group of people that were not involved in this thing were the coaches. They’re the one group that’s being penalized.”
Bowden, who was back in his Birmingham, Ala., hometown for a week of golfing with childhood buddies, was also mystified by the NCAA’s response.
“Joe, who I love to death, he and I got a battle that neither one of us thought would ever happen,” Bowden told WBRC-TV in Birmingham after a round of golf Thursday. “Joe would not want to win this thing the way they (NCAA) are doing this.”
The NCAA said 61 Seminole athletes cheated on an online test in a music history course from the fall of 2006 through summer 2007 or received improper help from staffers who provided them with answers to the exam and typed papers for them.
“The most severe penalties are appropriate when the academic mission of the university has been compromised,” the June 2 infractions committee response said, citing the academic misconduct at the University of Minnesota that led to basketball coach Clem Haskins’ firing.
A former academic counselor at Minnesota admitted to having written more than 400 papers and take-home tests for Gophers basketball players between 1993 and 1998 and said Haskins was aware of the cheating.
The committee’s letter to Florida State said it did not consider taking away wins and a 2007 national championship in track and field as a severe penalty.
The NCAA called Florida State’s staff involvement in the cheating “especially egregious because of their positions as individuals charged specifically with maintaining academic integrity within the athletics program.”
“This is the response from the committee on infractions which entered the finding that we are appealing so you wouldn’t expect them to change their mind,” said Bill Williams, the Tallahassee attorney handling the case for Florida State. “We will respond to this and then we ultimately have an oral argument before the infractions appeal committee in Indianapolis (Ind.) and then they will make a final decision.”
Williams said he expected the hearing would be scheduled in late summer or early fall, but admitted that was a guess.
“Heck, it could be anytime,” he said.
The 23-page response said the loss of scholarships imposed as part of the original penalty would have been much greater without taking away victories in the various sports where athletes involved in the cheating had competed.
Florida State did not challenge the loss of scholarship reductions that included two in football this year and another next year.
Florida State played in the 2007 Music City Bowl without two dozen players, including several starters. The Seminoles were defeated by Kentucky. Many of the same athletes were held out of the first three games on the 2008 season as part of their punishment.
