Kristen's story
I got the car on Father's day of 2008. Pretty much a bone stock 302 convertible in LX form. Took a while to decide on a name. Decided to name her after Kristen Bell, hot and smart!
![]() These are the pics from the dealer ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So far all that I have done to the car was swap in some 99 cloth seats and replace the top motor.

Kristen had a small oil leak and I finally got around to hunting it down. The oil pan gasket had pushed out and torn from the looks of the underside quite a while ago. It not much of a leak but enough to make a mess on the garage floor so while I am off this week I decided to fix it. I have a friend who is going to teach me how to pull the motor so I can do this kind of stuff at home easier.
While the motor is coming out anyway I decided to add some other bits that would go in much easier with it out. ![]() New rear main seal New oil pan gasket with steel core BBK chrome headers Underdrive pulleys "Mustang powered by ford" valve covers in black Other pics I took today while IO had it out to better show its starting condition, all pics should be clickable. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Open to other suggestions about what should go in. Thinking about a windage tray while the pan is off.

Details! I am new to 302s so its almost a different language lol.
347 is going to be a goal, thoug I will build it with a "new" block so I dont have to take her out of commission until the motor is ready.

well saturday after the window incident, took Kristen down to a friends shop to install all the goodies and check out the motor itself. Got there about 8:30 am and waited until 9:30 to get started after it cooled a bit. Motor came out easily enough with the help of a forklift and chain. Found the exhaust had been welded from the H to the tailpipes so that was a nightmare to get out. Looked like a 1st timer had done the welding it was horrible. We pulled all the smog junk off the car since one of the tubes was busted anyway. Short belt and pump will get pulled next weekend. BBK headers ( Exhaust - Headers, 86-93, 5.0, U/l, 1 5/8", Chrome, Bbk - Early Model Classic Mustang Restoration Parts ) fit well though a little tight where the H joins up. Flanges are a tight fit. We did have to cut the tail pipes off just past the mufflers to get it all down but we welded up some turndowns so its all good until I can get a aftermarket H and catback. The valve covers ( Engines & Components - Valve Cover, 86-93, "mustang", Black, 5.0 - Early Model Classic Mustang Restoration Parts ) look great but are just a hair too tall to fit under the stock upper unless you have a small spacer. It hits the throttle bracket. Or since we didnt have a spacer we used a chop saw to trim the bracket corner. Went with a set of underdrive pulleys as well ( Engines & Components - Pulleys, 79-93, 5.0, Polished Aluminum - Early Model Classic Mustang Restoration Parts ). Installed with no problems, though I may have to overdrive the alt if charging issues come up. Oil pan came off and was bad gasket was replaced with a FRP one with no problem.
Getting the motor back in wasnt bad, there were 3 of us. 2 on each side to wiggle it and one underneath to get it lined up on the converter correctly. Then we hooked everything back up, harness / vacuum lines / etc. Went to start it and she cranked and roared then died. One of the other guys tried it and pedaled it to keep it going. At low rpm < 2500 or so it pops pretty hard but if you rev it hard it sounds great. No vacuum leaks we can find. All the harness plugs we could think of checked out. Even tried swapping computers. No joy. The guys say it almost sounds to them like the timing is jumping but when we checked it with a light it was fine. So if anyone else has some ideas we're open to suggestion. They were going to see if they had another harness to try in case we damaged the original during install removal. Oh yeah I got home at 1:30 last night :p wifey wasnt too happy with that lol.

Did that, got some new wires, and rotor while we were at it to eliminate those since it looked like the originals were still on. Pretty sure that we checked for 180 out but is it possible to mess that up just pulling the motor out and putting it on a stand? we did have to turn it upside down to swap the pan gasket.

you didnt change the cam while it was out did you? did you check the IAC? oh and for suggestions as to mods... toss the 302/347 combo out and go with a 351 stroked out to a 406
bout the same price and you get more torque, more power and the stock block will hold up to more abuse than the 302 will before splitting in half.

Decided to go the 351 route but not sure about stoking it as a first time build. Gotta locate a block on the cheap now.
Jim got it figured out after work the other day. The problem was that a bit of gasket on one the old valve covers did not come off and when the new cover / gasket went on it was sucking a ton of unmetered air. Re-did the gasket and ground down a spot or two on the bottom of the upper where it was touching the new covers to make sure it all fit tight and he says its working fine now. Probably gonna go get it this weekend.

Here are some blah pics of the motor with the new bits in and the plaque repainted and polished, though I still need to buff off part of the blue on the plaque and get pics of it.
Before: ![]() ![]() ![]() After: ![]() ![]() ![]() Spent the morning fixing a jammed rear quarter window, nylon gear managed to bind on the worm gear, and repairing a small leak in the top motor resevoir after sopping up the oil that leaked out. Need to do a power steering flush next paycheck, that ought to be entertaining.

Discovered Miss Kristen was leaking the fluid for the top the other day so I spent sunday afternoon looking into the problem.took out th seat and cleaned the motor and lines where it had fluid splashed so I could see where the leak was. Lo and behold it was not a cracked line but it seems the like the seal on the hydrolic ram has given out so when you put the top down and it retracts the ram fluid escapes out the top. I have a replacement ram I got in the same deal to for the top motor now I just have to figure out how the fuck to get to the old to remove and replace it.
